OpenAPI parameter content debugging

Debug OpenAPI parameter content by checking schema exclusivity, media types, serialization, encoding boundaries, generated clients, validation, and examples.

An OpenAPI Parameter Object can describe a value with schema and serialization fields, or use content to associate one media type with a schema. The alternatives are mutually exclusive, and content is limited differently from a request body.

Generated clients and gateways can disagree when a specification combines both forms, lists several media types, or leaves percent-encoding and JSON serialization to multiple layers.

Inspect the complete parameter

Record the OpenAPI version, parameter name and location, required flag, schema or content branch, media type, examples, effective encoding, concrete wire value, and behavior of every renderer, generator, gateway, and server validator.

  • Choose schema or content, never both.
  • Use exactly the supported content media-type shape.
  • Keep path parameters required.
  • Define encoding at one transport boundary.

Compare the document with the wire

Create one synthetic structured value and write the expected raw path, query, header, or cookie representation byte for byte. Determine whether JSON is encoded before percent-encoding and whether the framework decodes once before parsing.

Do not treat a parameter content media type like an HTTP Content-Type header for the whole request. Request bodies and parameters have separate contracts and tooling capabilities.

Test every implementation stage

Use Flashman's YAML/JSON converter for the contract, URL tool for harmless query and path values, JSON formatter for parameter fixtures, and diff for generated code and captured requests.

Test absent, empty, null, scalar, object, and array values; reserved and Unicode characters; malformed JSON; duplicate parameters; proxies; generated clients; server validation; examples; bundling; and OpenAPI version upgrades.
