An OpenAPI Link describes how values from one operation's response can become parameters or a request body for another operation. Documentation tools can turn that relationship into navigable workflows, but the link does not invoke the target operation automatically.
Links break when a runtime expression points at the wrong response location, operationId values drift, encoded identifiers are transformed twice, or generated tooling supports only part of the feature.
Resolve one link on paper
Capture the source operation, response status and media type, link object, operationRef or operationId, parameter map, requestBody expression, concrete response fixture, resolved values, and target operation contract. Check the exact OpenAPI version used by each tool.
- Use one target selector per link.
- Match target parameter names and locations exactly.
- Escape JSON Pointer tokens in body expressions.
- Define behavior when source values are absent.
Preserve API trust boundaries
Treat every resolved value as untrusted input to the target operation. The caller still needs target authorization, validation, rate limits, and tenant isolation; a documented link does not transfer permissions or prove ownership.
Define percent-encoding at the parameter serialization layer and avoid constructing arbitrary URLs from response data. Keep examples synthetic and avoid embedding credentials, signed URLs, or customer identifiers in the specification.
Compare renderers and generators
Use Flashman's YAML/JSON converter for the contract, JSON formatter for response fixtures, URL tool for harmless resolved parameters, and diff for generated documentation or clients.
Test body, header, and supported expression sources; escaped properties; arrays; missing and null values; multiple responses; external operationRef values; renamed operationIds; encoding boundaries; authorization failures; and generator upgrades.
